The 10th International Summer School on Stress, Vienna, Austria
The theme of this year’s school, which was held by AUHS in collaboration with the Vienna Institute for Global Studies, Modul University, Vienna, Austria, was SEMART (Stress Education, Management and Resilience Training).
At the 10th International Summer School on Stress, organized by two of the School of Medicine, AUHS faculty, as co-directors of course, Prof. Sandor Szabo, MD, PhD, DSc(h.c.), FRCPath, AGAF, and Prof. Oksana Zayachkivska, MD, PhD, DSc.
Several presentations were made by AUHS faculty, namely Profs. Oksana Zayachkivska, John V. Schloss, Gerald A Maguire, and Sandor Szabo. The program and abstracts are below.
Prof. Sandor Szabo presented the following lectures: From the discovery of Hans Selye to modern concepts of distress & eustress, and Structural & functional stress-related gastrointestinal diseases.
Prof. Oksana Zayachkivska presented lectures on: The good & bad metabolic elements of distress and Future horizons in stress resilience: Focus on integrating AI and personalized health care.
Prof. Gerald A Maguire presented lectures on: Stress and psychiatric disorders and Overcoming the stress of stuttering: A primer of resilience & stress management.
Prof. John V. Schloss presented a lecture on Stress and Alzheimer’s disease presented lecture: Nutraceutical guidelines for prevention and therapy.
Among other topics discussed were:
- Orchestration of the bodily response to stress: Focus on corticotropin releasing factor
- Stress-related diseases: Focus on the microbiota-gut-brain axis
- Vagus nerve stimulation and hypnosis for irritable bowel syndrome and inflammatory bowel disease
- Understanding and reducing work-related distress
- Stress reduction and work stress management.
These topics ranged in scope from molecular and cellular mechanisms of understanding intra-, intercellular, and neuroendocrine regulation to stress to the response of the whole person. Several factors that affect stress management and stress resilience were also proposed.
In the associated symposium Vienna at the crossroads of medical knowledge and sciences, Prof. Oksana Zayachkivska presented her recent research: The “Wiener Schmäh” in stress resilience: From Selye to Nobelists Guillemin (1977) and Kandel (2000) which was supported by a grant from the Paton Historical Studies Fund of The Physiological Society (UK) (Hans Selye, the founder of collaborative, interdisciplinary and cross-sectional research: From his recognition of stress response to development of stress resilience – the future of health care in 21st century).
