Boots, BBQ, and BONUS: A Nashville Experience to Remember

Boots, BBQ, and BONUS: A Nashville Experience to Remember

By Dr. Ivy Javaluyas, Executive Director, Student Affairs

This April, we had the wonderful opportunity to attend the Business Officers of Nursing Schools (BONUS) Annual Meeting in Nashville, Tennessee—a city full of music, charm, and yes, some of the best BBQ we’ve ever had! Representing AUHS, Ms. Kim Dang, our founder and owner, and I joined fellow business leaders in nursing education for several days of learning, connection, and collaboration.

The BONUS conference was packed with valuable sessions focused on financial management, strategic planning, academic operations, technology, and leadership—all tailored to the unique challenges and opportunities we face in nursing education. It was both informative and inspiring to engage with colleagues from nursing schools across the country, sharing insights and innovative approaches to supporting our students and institutions.

The BONUS conference also focused on the latest strategies and tools shaping academic nursing administration—including a growing emphasis on artificial intelligence (AI) in education. Sessions explored how AI is helping to personalize learning, automate administrative tasks, and enhance student engagement.

Beyond the conference room, Nashville gave us plenty to smile about. From delicious Southern BBQ to lively downtown walks (we logged over 6 miles in one day!), the trip balanced professional growth with personal joy. And of course, we couldn’t leave without trying on a pair—or two—of authentic cowboy boots.

We returned to AUHS with new strategies, strengthened connections, and renewed energy to serve our students and community. The BONUS Annual Meeting reminded us that meaningful work can happen alongside great food, good company, and a little fresh air.
